In the 1950’s, a man named Ray Croc convinced the McDonald’s brothers to let him become the franchising agent for the original McDonalds restaurant after noticing how unique their ‘fast food’ process was.
Over the next decade, Croc took the McDonalds brand to new heights, expanding the franchise rapidly throughout the USA…
However, in the early days, Croc only focused on making money through selling the unique ‘fast food’ system to franchisee owners, while also making small cuts on the sales of the food that they sold.
This meant that even with the size of the business, Croc really wasn’t making much money at all…
It was at this time, Harry Sonneborn came into the picture and opened Croc’s eyes to the MASSIVE opportunity right in front of him…
In the past, if someone wanted to buy into the McDonalds franchise, they had to come up with the upfront capital investment themselves for the land and construction of the building – which was naturally a massive barrier for the expansion of the company.
So, Sonneborn convinced Croc that he should actually buy the land and build the property himself, and then lease it to the franchisees at a large mark-up.
Sonneborn knew that the real money was actually in the real estate business and not in the burgers and fries’ business.
This change of focus over the last seven decades has now turned McDonalds into a multibillion-dollar real estate empire!
But what can you learn from this story?
You need to STOP thinking that you’re just in the plumbing, electrical, refrigeration, carpentry, painting, etc. business!
You’re actually in the OPPORTUNITY business!
That is, the business of seeking opportunities that make you more money.
And as the business owner, your PRIMARY focus needs to be on seeking out these opportunities.
